2005: Ratz Stopped at Eboli
by Carl Russo
1
My fascination with southern Italy coincided with a desire to see the Basilicata region of Carlo Levi's 1947 non-fiction masterpiece, Christ Stopped at Eboli, then continue on to the Calabrian village of Cariati, which is a surname in my mother's family. Those two goals would be enough to turn this vacation into a real journey, but while packing my bags I received an email from the Milano Film Festival, informing me that my silly little film was accepted. Would I be available to present it in person? Would I! Ignoring the fact that this event takes place on the opposite end of Italy, I said, "Sì, sì, sì!"

Like the restaurant critic with a bad first impression, it took a return trip to Naples to fall in love with Italy's most vibrant city. I saw nary a foreigner on the west side of the Via Toledo--the other side of the tracks--where street life teems like a classic neorealist film.
