Editor:

I’d like to try to set the record straight regarding the grand mansion known as "The Russian Embassy" at 1198 Fulton Street ("A ‘Freaking Decayed Giant’ Gets Restored," May 1997). Your article repeats the rumor that Charles Manson once lived on the premises. In fact, Manson lived in the upper Haight (several blocks away) just long enough to collect his "family" before packing them up to Southern California.

The confusion is understandable when you consider that one of the convicted killers in the Sharon Tate massacre, Bobby Beausoleil (whom your reporter misidentifies as Bobby Bosely) did live in the mansion. At the time, however, he was a follower of underground filmmaker Kenneth Anger who took control of the mansion during a part of the freewheeling sixties.

Beausoleil starred in at least one film shot by Anger in that house before switching his allegiance to Manson. But even the FBI has been unable to connect Anger directly with Manson, let alone establish the two men as roommates.

Sincerely,

Carl Russo
